Five papers will be written for this class. All papers will have dry-runs or rough drafts due. These rough drafts will be turned in for a grade. A final paper will reflect on your work for the course, replacing the mid-term and final exams. Please review the English 111 resource page [here] for more information.
Papers one and two (two copies of rough draft; two copies of revised paper) will be turned in as rough drafts for feedback from me. You then will revise your draft and turn in the revised paper. Both the rough draft and the revised paper will be graded. This writing will help you to write compositions as narrative and exploratory.
Papers three and four (three copies of rough draft; two copies of revised paper) will also require rough drafts. The drafts will receive feedback from your peers, along with a grade from me. You will revise your draft and the revised paper will be turned in for a grade. This writing will help you to write compositions as description and argument.
The fifth paper (two copies of rough draft; two copies of revised paper) will also require a rough draft. It will be focused as analysis composition, and could incorporate the areas of narrative, exposition, description, and argument. Both the rough draft and the revised version will be graded. This paper is also a research paper, and at least five outside sources must be cited--three print and two electronic.
The portfolio statement will be submitted as a final version, without a rough draft. This one-page paper will be a reflection of all your work in the semester, which constitutes your writing portfolio. |
Each paper will have one-inch margins, be typed, double-spaced, and use an 11-point or 12-point font.
The top of the paper should be formatted as such:
[your name]
English 111-15
Professor Dallas
[date]
Then skip a line and center the following:
[title of paper]
Skip another line and begin your paper.
The first paper will be three complete pages or longer. The rough draft should be at least two pages, and the revision should be at least three pages.
The second paper will be three complete pages or longer. The rough draft should be at least two pages, and the revision should be at least three pages.
The third paper will be three complete pages or longer. The rough draft should be at least two pages, and the revision should be at least three pages.
The fourth paper will be three complete pages or longer. The rough draft should be at least two pages, and the revision should be at least three pages.
The fifth paper, an analysis paper, will be five complete pages or longer, and will use references or outside sources. The rough draft should be at least three pages, and the revision should be at least five pages. The outside sources will be on a separate page and not count toward the page total.
The portfolio statement (one page, SINGLE-spaced) should reflect on your writing this semester, and discuss which type of composition you prefer and why.
The writing portfolio is a two-pocket folder. All rough drafts should be placed in the right pocket; the revised papers should be placed in the left pocket. The portfolio statement should be placed on top of the left hand side. |
Note: Late papers will not be accepted unless you have an excused absence, and then the work must be turned in by the next class period.
A rough draft of the first paper (narrative) is due the 3rd week of the semester. The revised paper will be due the 4th week of the semester.
A rough draft of the second paper (exploratory) is due the 5th week of the semester. The revised paper is due the 6th week of the semester.
A rough draft of the third paper (description) is due the 7th week of the semester. The revised paper is due the 8th week of the semester.
A rough draft of the fourth paper (argument) is due the 9th week of the semester. The revised paper is due the 10th week of the semester.
A rough draft of the fifth paper (analysis) is due the 12th week of the semester. The revised paper is due the 13th week of the semester.
The writing portfolio and portfolio statement are due before or during the scheduled final examination period on Tuesday, April 25th, by 10:20 a.m. If this is not turned in, you will not pass the course. (Please remember that I may have some of these items; they will be included in the portfolio when considering your grade for the course). |
