Journal entries:
Critical reading analyses:

Two journal entries per week will be written for this class. Each journal entry should be handwritten on one sheet of paper. These entries should be kept in a two-pocket folder. Your name and date should be at the top.

Each entry should be at least one page long, that includes a summarization of the reading (see. p. 38 of Presence), and respond to one of the following:

  • This reading reminds me of...
  • The author feels .... about...., but my position is ..... because.....
  • If I could speak to the author, I'd say...
  • I'd like to know why the author said...

Weekly journal entries will be turned in on Thursdays. There will be twenty journal entries in total, two due each week from week 2 through week 11 of the semester. Late journal entries will not be accepted unless you have an excused absence, and then the work must be turned in by the next class period.

A critical reading analysis paper for each reading assignment will be a response to the assigned reading. Each analysis paper will be typed for this class.

Your analysis paper should address the eleven questions from the Reading Analysis handout. The paper will be single-spaced, with one-inch margins. Its length will vary, based upon your responses to the questions. The top of the paper should be formatted as such:

[your name]
English 111-15
Professor Dallas
[date]

Then skip a line and center the following:

[title of reading (in double quotes), by [author of reading], [page numbers]

Skip another line and begin your analysis paper.

The critical reading analysis paper will be due on Tuesday, the day the reading assignment from Presence is due. Your responses will be used for the class period, then turned in for grading. These responses will receive a check, check-plus, or a check-minus, depending on the potential contribution to the class discussion. No response paper means a "zero." Late papers will not be accepted unless you have an excused absence, and then the work must be turned in by the next class period.
