In order to gain the best understanding of the periods of American literature, we will discuss works in class and online. Part of the prepartation for discussion is reading and thinking about how the works can shape outr lives. To help us prepare for discussions, a typed response will be required, no more than one page in length, single-spaced. Your response paper should address the questions below. The top of the paper should be formatted as such:
[your name]
English 272-01
Professor Dallas
[date]
Then skip a line and center the following:
[title of reading (in double quotes), by [author of reading], [page numbers]
Skip another line and begin your response paper.
Your responses will be used for the class period, then turned in for grading. In class, they will be handed in, online, they will be e-mailed. These responses will receive a check, check-plus, or a check-minus, depending on the potential contribution to the class discussion. No response paper means a "zero." These responses will not be accepted late unless you have a valid and documented excuse.
Here are some questions to consider when preparing your response:
- How does the reading examine the literary period under discussion?
- Relate a similar story from your experience to one in the reading.
- Which character do you admire the most? Why?
- Identify or select a sentence or two that strikes you as important or controversial. Why?
- If I could speak to the author, I'd say...
- Explain the use of figurative language in the reading.
- I'd like to know why the author said...
In class you will be expected to read from or refer to your reading response. During online discussions, you will be expected to post portions of your response to facilitate discussion topics.
