During this semester we will discuss and produce various documents that will help you communicate in the workplace. These documents will focus on content, style, and applicability to particular workplace situations.
General document formats:
The document will be single-spaced, typed, with one-inch margins. Its length will vary, based upon the document type. The following information will be incoprorated into the document; otherwsie a separate cover page should be formatted as such:

Reading responses:
We will use the reading responses as practice documents, by working with letter, memo, precis, and electronic mail formats to respond the the assigned readings. These practice documents will give you a better understanding of the structure and information pertinent to the formats. These practice documents will also provide a forum for you to practice using different font types and designing your own formats, while considering the reception of these documents by different audiences. These responses will receive a check, check-plus, or a check-minus, depending on the potential contribution to the class discussion. No response paper means a "zero." These responses will not be accepted late unless you have a valid and documented excuse.
Memos, letters, precis, electronic mail:
These documents will be specific to a particular need; for instance, a memo may provide information based upon a proposal. They will be included as part of the workplace portfolio and you may determine which document to use for the specific portfolio item.
Risk analysis document:
This document will be a response to a particular scenario presented in class or one of your own choosing, based upon your chosen professional or business field of study. This document can be structured as a public health bulletin, for example, and communicate information about an uncertain physical or environmental hazard. The document will be peer-reviewed, and evaluated by the class for credibility and reliability. (BPC, Chap. 12).
Organizational crisis document:
This document will be a response to a particular scenario presented in class or one of your own choosing, based upon your chosen professional or business field of study. This document can be structured as a human resources directive, for example, and reflect an organization's response to an internal or external threat, lawsuit, recall, or a major, unpredictable event with potnetially negative effects. The document will be peer-reviewed, and evaluated by the class for credibility and reliability. (BPC, Chap. 13).
Designing memorandum and letter formats:
Designing these documents will allow you to be as creative as you wish, balancing the needs of your audience while providing you the opportunity to show your design skills. The design process lets you customize the formats for your personal needs and interests.
Written proposal:
This document will demonstrate your ability to write a proposal which may request external funding, and follow general guidelines of a prospective proposal. More detail will be provided on this document later. (BPC, Chap. 10).
Sales proposal & presentation :
The sales proposal will be based upon the written proposal. It should address the most important points of the writtne proposal. This sales proposal will be presented in class, and should be supported by visual or other aids. This should be a five to seven minute oral presentation. (BPC, Chap. 11).
Resume and cover letter:
In order to prepare for the workplace, students will generate a "before" and "after" resume and cover letter. The "before" version will give the student an idea of the strenghts and weaknesses of these documents. The "after" version should reflect the incorporated knowledge and skills addressed in class. (BPC, Chap. 2).
