Winter 2010: RPW 260, section 01: Introduction to Professional & Technical Writing

Course information
ENGL 260: Intro to Prof Writing. An introduction to the principles and practices of the field of professional and technical writing. Provides an overview of common document genres and the technologies that writers use to produce them. Includes exploration of the professional writing workplace through guest lectures, field observations, and readings of workplace narratives. Prerequisite: All reading and writing Basic Skills requirements must be completed before enrolling in this course.

The reading and project assignments help you engage with some of the issues in professional and technical writing--from the classroom to the workplace. This course will also provide an opportunity for you to BEGIN your PTW portfolio; this is a continual project that will require you to fashion documents for a broader audience, and incorporate the 'revise and edit' process. We will use Adobe CS4 software to assist in our audience-engagement focus.

We will specifically look at:

  • Audience & Context (incorporating Purpose and Genre)

while considering:

  • Document Design
  • Language and Conventions
  • Tools and Technologies
